Fall television 2011

I finally just finished the first season of The Walking Dead. Anyone watch this? All I can say is..WOW.

Next up I'm hoping to tackle Boardwalk Empire. I had started the first season awhile ago and never finished it. I'm a sucker for it because it's set in Atlantic City where my family is from...And I'm always into period pieces.

I have said it before and I will say it again...

I WATCH ENTIRELY TOO MUCH T.V.!!!

I'm a sucker for a good show.....

But now that I am a mom my DVR is piling up with shows that I haven't been able to watch. As a mom my free time is def. little to none. And the majority of the shows I watch I can't watch with Austin around.

But regardless....There are some new shows premiering this season that I will be adding to my already overflowing DVR.

Here's my Fall 2011 TV watch list.

MONDAYS:

8:00 Terra Nova. Think Jurassic Park. I'm not sure about this one. It could be a hit or a total disaster. But it's dinosaurs. What's not to like about dinosaurs?

9:00 House. "Sigh" This is a show that has totally "jumped the shark". But yet I still watch. I'm not sure why. Must be a loyalty thing.

10:00 Hawaii Five-O. This was def. a surprise hit from last year. I'm usually not a fan of remakes but this one is very good. It helps that it has Alex O'loughlin in it :)

TUESDAYS:

8:00 Yawn. Nothing I care to watch.

9:00 RINGER!!! I'm so looking forward to this and I really hope it is a hit. I'm a huge BTVS fan so I love Sarah Michelle Gellar and will always support anything she is in. I'm hoping all the Buffy fans won't be too critical of it when they realize that it isn't a Buffy part II. It's a totally different show.

10:00 Parenthood. This is really such a great family show. It has drama and comedy. I'm glad it is back for another season.

WEDNESDAY:
8:00 Survivor! ;P
And I possible could be checking out the new comedy Up All Night.

9:00 Modern Family. This show is the best comedy on tv.

10:00 Law and Order SVU

THURSDAY:

8:00 Vampire Diaries! Best show on TV right now!
Big Bang Theory! Nerds are cool AND funny.

9:00 Secret Circle. This show is about witches. I saw the trailer and it looked
pretty good. I'm hoping it doesn't suck and that it is worthy of the VP lead in.

10:00 Yawn. Nothing.

FRIDAY: I have no social life and am old now so I'm glad there are good shows on Fridays!!!

8:00 Nikita So glad this is back for a 2nd season, but scared that since it is on Fridays now that they will cancel it after this season. It's a very good show.

9:00 FRINGE How do I love Fringe? Let me count the ways...Seriously this show is awesome and I wish more people watched it. I'm thrilled it is back for another season, but it needs to stick around for years to come and shows on Friday's don't usually stick around.
GRIMM This is a new show. It looks different so I'm going to check it out. Not sure if it will stick around though.

10:00 Blue Bloods This show could be complete crap and I'd still watch it because it stars Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids On The Block. But, in all actuality it is a pretty decent show. And it stars my former hometown girl Bridget Moynahan former girlfriend of Tom Brady.

SATURDAYS:

Nothing as usual.

SUNDAYS:

Sunday night football! But besides that I'll be watching The Good Wife at 9:00. Another great show that doesn't get the respect that it deserves.

SEE??? I watch too much tv. And this is just my major network shows. There's still a bunch of cable shows I watch too.

What are some of your favorite shows on tv? Any new shows that you are looking forward to?

Dinosaur World Review

Last weekend we ventured out to "Dinosaur World".

We had never been before as it is a little bit of a drive from our home in Orlando. It took us about an hour and a half to drive there.

My 2 and a half year old son is very big into Dinosaurs, plus I had a 50% off admission coupon, so I was interested to check it out and see if it was worth the drive.

Here is the basic info for Dinosaur World:

Address: 5145 Harvey Tew Rd Plant City, FL (It is located right off of Interstate 4)
FREE parking!
Hours are every day from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. (Nov-January is 9-5)
Admission is $12.75 per adult. $9.75 for ages 3-12. $10.75 for seniors over 60 and children under the age of 3 are FREE.

My verdict: DINOSAUR WORLD IS AWESOME!!!

We got there around 10 in the morning to try to miss some of the heat and possible crowd. The entire park is shaded quite well as it is somewhat set up like a nature walk.
This park isn't your average theme park. There are no rides. You basically walk around trails and get to see over 150 life size dinosaur models. Each dinosaur you see has a plaque which tells the species of dinosaur and give some information about them.
They also have the "Boneyard" which is basically a big sandbox with dinosaur "bones" buried underneath. My son had a great time digging in the sand with shovels and dusting the bones off with a paint brush. (Paint brush and shovels were provided on site).
There also is the fossil dig. The fossil dig only occurs at specific times. Kids get to sift through sand to search for real fossils to take home.

The section that I was least impressed with was the play ground. There wasn't much to it at all and there was very little shade. BUT I saw a sign that said that they are in the process of re-doing it so hopefully it will be new and improved soon.
They also are in the process of building a dinosaur museum.
And of course there is the gift shop where your children will beg you for numerous dinosaur items!
They also host birthday parties.

Three special items of notice:

You might want some extra quarters as they have a machine to get fish food out of to feed the fish in the pond. (I only had one quarter so Austin was not happy)

Pets are allowed in the park as long as they are leashed!!!

There is ZERO food service!!! (There are some vending machines through out the park).
This was not a problem for us as we packed our lunch and ate at one of the numerous picnic tables in the park. You also are allowed to bring in outside food from establishments such as Subway, McDonalds, etc.

Overall, we had a great time. My son loved walking by himself and looking at all the dinosaurs. It wasn't very crowded so I didn't have to worry about loosing him. There were no rides that he had to grumpily wait in line for and Mommy was perfectly pleased to not spend lots of money on admission and food.
AND it only took a few hours to see/do everything so it didn't completely exhaust us and it didn't interfere with naps.

If you are looking for a laid back park experience for minimal cost and don't mind a little bit of a drive..I would highly recommend Dinosaur World!

Apologies

Elements of a Proper Apology: An apology is much, much more than "I'm sorry." That's just the beginning! You also need to tell the aggrieved party that (a) you recognize that what you did was wrong; (b) you feel bad about whatever wretched thing you did; and (c) you will genuinely do your best not to repeat said wretched behavior in the future. (Note: For particularly heinous crimes, you may have to do/say something extra in order to complete the apology; this may include discussing what the fuck you were thinking during the bout of bad behavior or doing something as a gesture of your sincere regret.)

If your apology does not include all of these elements, it will not come across as sincere. It is not sufficient to simply say you're sorry but neglect to change your behavior. Changing the harmful behavior that led to the need for the apology is the most crucial element here; if you exclude it, you may as well not issue the apology in the first place.

Insincere Apologies: If you're only apologizing because you want the offended party to like you again or you just want to smooth things over but don't actually understand what you did wrong, feel sorry about it, or plan to make sure it doesn't happen again, then you are delivering an insincere apology in bad faith. This is dishonest, condescending, and misleading, and it is not permitted.

Insincere apologies are false advertising, and you are pretending to be something you are not (nice, caring, sensitive, regretful, and most of all, unlikely to repeat the bad behavior). When you apologize, people assume that you are willing to do each step described above. That's the unspoken contractual agreement of an apology. If you aren't willing to commit to all the elements, not only are you misrepresenting your intentions, but you are also compounding your own bad behavior.

Conception of Devotion

In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest,
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do,
and that sight becomes this art.
~Rumi
************************************************************************************

CONCEPTION OF DEVOTION

Separate seeds planted
Handfuls of earth
Raindrops aplenty
Time bequeathed
Cultivating
Nurturing
Oh how the sun smiles down!
Lone roots
Stretching
Exploring
Searching
Our solitary roots entwine
Now we become one

Wait.
Nothing so simple
The storm races in
Harsh rain unleashed
Burned by vengeful wind
Blinded by light
For beauty shall not exist
Without existence
Of ugly
This too
Shall pass
So together we cling
Separate
Yet never apart

My Best Friend

The other night I had a dream about her.

I was searching for her and couldn't find her.

I can't recall ever actually seeing her in my dream.

But I knew.

I knew it was her that I was searching for.

I didn't find her.

I awoke in immense sadness and pain.

I've carried this with me for 6 years.

The pain has buried itself away over those 6 years.

Sometimes I go a long time with out thinking of her.

Then out of the blue something happens to make me think of her.

Usually it's big life events. When we bought our house. When I had Austin.

And then it's the dreams. Those are the worst of all.

I can place blame.

I can accept blame.

But it doesn't matter.

It hasn't mattered in 6 years.

I was feeling sad.

I guess I wanted to feel even more sad.

I opened the box and went digging.

And read the letter.

I miss her.

I think friendship is like a glass ornament.

Once broken it rarely goes back together the same way.

I had the glue out.

But she just swept the pieces up and threw them away

And never looked back.

"The Fighter" movie review

Saturday night we watched “The Fighter”.
I was definitely looking forward to watching this movie. How can a movie be that bad when Mark Wahlberg is in it? (I still fancy his brother Donnie more though) But honestly, I know almost nothing about boxing, nor do I care about boxing. I found out though that this movie was more about family issues first and boxing second.

“The Fighter” is a true story about Irish Mickey Ward and his boxer-turned-cocaine-addict-brother Dickey, who helps Mickey train before going pro in the 1980’s. Mickey is played by Mark Wahlberg and Dickey is played by Christian Bale. Mickey’s girlfriend Charlene is played by Amy Adams and the boy’s mother Alice is played by Melissa Leo.

This movie has been nominated for Best Picture, Christian Bale is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo are nominated for Best Actress in a supporting Role.

This film was a story of an Irish family, struggling through life, love, commitment, and boxing. Christian Bale is well deserved for an Oscar nomination as he once again transformed himself into a character for Dickey Ward. Amy Adams and Melissa Leo both are good in my opinion, but what really surprises me is the lack of an Oscar nomination for Mark Wahlberg. He is amazing. I can hardly believe that he would be left out of the Best Actor category. Assholes. I bet it's because he used to model underwear back in the day.

Verdict: B- a great story about the struggle of never giving up.

"The Kids are All Right" movie review

Friday night I managed to watch the movie “The Kids are All Right”. Chris had absolutely no interest in this movie so after him and Austin went to bed I put it on.

The overall gist of the movie is that it is about a lesbian couple, their two children and the sudden involvement of the sperm donor who fathered the couple’s children via artificial insemination.

Nic is played by Annette Bening and Jules is played by Julieanne Moore. Their two children are the 15 year old Laser played by Josh Hutcherson and 18 year old Joni played by Mia Wasikowska from Tim Burton’s Alice and Wonderland. Mark Ruffalo plays Paul, the biological father of both of the children.

This movie has been nominated for the Oscar Best Picture, as well as Annette Bening is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.
Neither are deserving of the award. I honestly can’t believe anyone liked this movie.

First of all…I guess it is possible that I am becoming a prude in my old age, but WOW for the amount of sex. And not just the rustling under the cover type sex. The kind of movie that if they showed anymore skin, it would have been considered a porn movie.

That being said, I liked the characters of the film. They were quirky, interesting and believable, but the writing sucked With such great actors, this could have been a meaningful exploration of the relationship issues that same sex parents, their children and their sperm donors face in this age of changing family dynamics. Instead, we get a sex filled movie, where the biological dad ends up losing out on these kids that he has come to genuinely care about, while the mom Jules comes out completely unscathed.

Verdict: F-Don’t waste your time.

Best Picture Nominees

My goal is to watch all of the films that are nominated for a best picture Oscar this year.

Usually, the films that get nominated for best picture end up being movies that I completely dislike. They are usually films that I find boring, confusing, or just plain dumb. And I have always been a huge critic of the awards shows because they are blatantly biased against anything that has to do with science fiction. And, I must add that I think it is entirely ridiculous that they nominate ten movies. I mean really?

That being said, I have already seen some of the movies that have been nominated.

~Inception: I ADORED this movie. Definitely one of my top movies ever. That should come as no surprise to anyone. I just cannot sing the praises enough of this movie. It was interesting, thought provoking, completely different from the usual cookie cutter movies that are made today, and awesome special effects that were done without the use of CGI. That being said, I’m quite certain that the Academy will not show Christopher Nolan any love for this movie as they seem to view science fiction as not a real genre. And I am entirely appalled that Nolan was not nominated for best director.

~The Social Network: Honestly I had zero interest in this movie. I could care less about the beginnings of this phenomenon that we call Facebook. However, I LOVE Justin Timberlake. Ah dear Justin, how I wish you would make some music. But instead…he is focusing on acting. Most of the movies he’s made have been not so good. But I still watch them because just seeing him is yum! So I watched The Social Network and I must say I was surprised. Justin did a decent job and the movie itself was semi-interesting. It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but I just don’t get the hoopla and press that has surrounded this movie as the “movie of the year”. It wasn’t anything special.

~Black Swan: I was interested in seeing this movie from the moment I heard about it. Natalie Portman is one of my favorite actor’s. It seems like the only thing people mentioned about this movie was the kiss between Portman and Kunis, continuing the belief that sex sells. Overall I thought this movie was good, though weird. Portman and Kunis acted brilliantly and the imagery was excellent.

~The Fighter: I have not seen this movie yet, but I have it downloaded ready to go. All I know is that it is about Irish brother’s who are boxers. One of the brother’s I believe has a drug problem after suffering a humiliating defeat. I like all things Irish and I like Mark Wahlberg (though I fancy his brother Donny more. NKOTB 4EVER!).

~The King’s Speech: I never knew what this was about until I heard the buzz about it at the Globes. The movie is the story of King George VI of England, his ascention to the throne and the speech therapist who helps him overcome his stuttering. I like the premise of someone overcoming a disability and my studying of deaf and speech problems makes this even more interesting to me. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

~The Kid’s are All Right: Another movie that I hadn’t heard anything about. I hear the premise is a lesbian couple that has two children that were conceived by artificial insemination and end up bringing in the birth father to their family. Could be good…but also could be boring.

~Toy Story 3: How cool would it be if an animated movie won best picture? I’m sad to say that I haven’t seen this yet, but I have seen all the other Toy Story movies and am familiar with the awesomeness that this franchise is. Hopefully, I can get my son to sit down and watch this one with me.

~True Grit: From IMDB- “Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested”. I’m going to give it a try, but normally I would have no interest in a movie like this.

~Winter’s Bone: Another movie I know nothing of. From IMDB-“With an absent father and a withdrawn and depressed mother, 17 year-old Ree Dolly keeps her family together in a dirt poor rural area. She's taken aback however when the local Sheriff tells her that her father put up their house as collateral for his bail and unless he shows up for his trial in a week's time, they will lose it all. She knows her father is involved in the local drug trade and manufactures crystal meth, but everywhere she goes the message is the same: stay out of it and stop poking your nose in other people's business. She refuses to listen, even after her father's brother, Teardrop, tells her he's probably been killed. She pushes on, putting her own life in danger, for the sake of her family until the truth, or enough of it, is revealed”. Sounds like it could have potential.

~127 Hours: This will probably be the last movie that I watch. If, I watch it at all. I definitely have zero interest in this one. It is the true story of a man who has a boulder fall on his arm trapping him alone in a canyon in Utah. To save himself he chops off his arm or something. Yuck. Not something that I really want to see.

After I hopefully watch them all I will give my opinion as to who should win the Oscar. I’m already betting that Inception will get screwed just because…
